Demand for air conditioning rises by 500% following UK heatwaves
After another summer of intense heatwaves, Birmingham Air Conditioning Services had its busiest year yet, with demand for air-conditioning systems up by an unprecedented 500%.
We weren’t alone. Air conditioning companies across the country saw enquiries rise sharply, putting real pressure on stock throughout the industry.
We went into summer well stocked, but demand was so high that we, like many other suppliers, eventually ran out of some systems. It’s a clear sign of how quickly attitudes towards air conditioning are changing, and why it’s worth planning ahead of the next heatwave rather than waiting for it.
Air Conditioning is becoming a necessity, not a luxury
For years, air conditioning in the UK was seen as something mainly for hotels, hospitals, shops and larger commercial buildings. That’s changing.
Hotter summers and more frequent spells of extreme heat are making it harder to keep homes and workplaces at a comfortable temperature. Bedrooms can stay warm long after the sun’s gone down, while offices, shops, schools and healthcare settings can quickly become uncomfortable for staff, customers, pupils and patients.
This year’s 500% jump in demand is the biggest we’ve seen, but it’s part of a wider trend. Each year, more homeowners and businesses choose to install air conditioning rather than wait for the next heatwave.
Modern systems can also provide energy-efficient heating during the colder months, so they’re useful year-round, not just for the hottest few weeks of summer.
What is El Nino?
El Niño is a naturally occurring climate pattern caused by unusually warm surface water in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. It occurs irregularly, roughly every two to seven years, and can influence weather patterns around the world.
The Pacific Ocean might feel a long way from Birmingham and the UK, but changes on this scale can affect global temperatures, rainfall patterns and atmospheric circulation.
A strong El Niño developed during 2026, and forecasters have put the odds of it continuing through the end of the year at around 97-98%. Some scientists have gone further, warning that this could develop into a “super El Niño” heading into 2027, an event strong enough to push global temperatures to record levels and trigger extreme weather in different parts of the world.
We already got a taste of what that can look like. In May 2026, the UK saw its hottest May day on record, with temperatures reaching 35.1°C at Kew Gardens, more than 2°C above the previous record set back in 1922. It was part of a wider heatwave across Europe, and it arrived far earlier in the year than most people would expect.
That said, El Niño doesn’t automatically mean Birmingham or the wider UK will get a heatwave. Its effect on British weather is more complicated because it interacts with several other climate influences, and according to the Met Office, its UK impacts can vary considerably between seasons and individual events.
What we do know is that temperatures are trending upwards over the longer term, and this year’s record-breaking May is a reminder that extreme heat isn’t just a July or August problem anymore.
Why it pays to plan before the next heatwave
Demand for air conditioning peaks as soon as temperatures start rising. That’s also when installation diaries fill up and some of the most popular systems become hard to source.
This year showed just how fast supplies can run out once a heatwave hits. Even companies that prepare carefully and hold good stock can be caught out when demand spikes that quickly.
Planning ahead gives you more time to:
– Choose the right system for your property
– Arrange installation at a convenient time
– Compare options without feeling rushed
– Think about energy efficiency and running costs
– Get your system installed before temperatures rise
– Avoid the peak summer rush
Installing during the cooler months also means the system can be properly planned around your building, rather than chosen simply because it’s the only model still available.
Choosing the right air conditioning system
Every home and commercial building is different. The right system depends on the size and layout of the space, how many people use it, how much natural light it gets, and how the room or building is used.
An undersized system will struggle to cool the space properly. An unnecessarily large one could cost more to install and run than you need.
At Birmingham Air Conditioning Services, we’re not tied to a single manufacturer, so we can recommend a system based on what genuinely suits your property, your requirements and your budget.
Whether it’s a single split system for a bedroom, air conditioning for an office, or a more complex commercial installation, our team can help you find a practical, energy-efficient solution.
Birmingham-built solutions for complex buildings
For larger commercial and industrial buildings, an off-the-shelf system isn’t always the right answer.
Manufacturing has always been part of Birmingham’s story, and it’s part of ours too. From our factory in Garretts Green, we design and build bespoke Air Handling Units in-house.
That means we can build a system around the specific needs of a building, rather than offering a one-size-fits-all solution. It’s a specialist capability few independent air-conditioning companies can offer, and one we’re proud to continue here in Birmingham.
Our manufacturing capability also gives us more flexibility when standard systems don’t fit, or when a project has more complex ventilation and air-quality needs.
Don’t wait for the next heatwave
Nobody can say exactly what Birmingham’s weather will bring in 2027. But this year’s record demand has shown how quickly air-conditioning systems and installation slots can disappear once temperatures rise.
If you’re considering air conditioning for your home or business, the best time to start planning is before the next spell of hot weather arrives.
Birmingham Air Conditioning Services has been helping homeowners, businesses and public-sector organisations create comfortable, well-controlled environments for more than 30 years.
